spin-up-in-the-cloud-icon.pngVirtualization continues to be a big trend in the IT channel. That’s why we’re excited to introduce LiveBoot 2.0, which includes Cloud LiveBoot for Microsoft Hyper-V and gives MSPs protecting VMware vSphere or Microsoft Hyper-V environments with Barracuda Backup – Intronis MSP Edition a quick and easy backup and disaster recovery option if a customer’s VM goes down.

To give you a closer look at the new functionality and enhancements included in this release and how it can help MSPs, we spoke with Chris Crellin, senior director of product management for Intronis MSP Solutions by Barracuda.

LiveBoot 2.0 Q&A with Chris Crellin

What are the highlights of the LiveBoot 2.0 release for Barracuda Backup – Intronis MSP Edition?

This new release expands Cloud LiveBoot to include the ability to rapidly recover Microsoft Hyper-V environments. It also reduces boot times to just minutes and includes load-balancing, a new VM preview feature, and user interface improvements that allow pre-configuration and bulk management.

Which enhancement do you think will be most exciting for our MSP partners?

The ability to spin up a Hyper-V virtual machine in the Barracuda Cloud after the VM or virtual environment fails or after a site disaster is going to be particularly exciting for our MSP partners. We know that Microsoft Hyper-V is very popular among MSPs, especially if they’re a Microsoft shop, so this is functionality they’ve been looking forward to.

How do LiveBoot and Cloud LiveBoot help MSPs?

If an MSP doesn’t have this functionality and one of their customers experienced an outage, they would still have to restore the affected VMs one way or another. How they would do that would depend on the circumstances of the outage, but it can be time-consuming, taking days or hours instead of minutes.

In contrast, Cloud LiveBoot lets MSPs spin up VMware or Microsoft Hyper-V VMs in Barracuda Cloud Storage, and LiveBoot lets them leverage their local Barracuda Backup appliance as a storage source for VMware hypervisors. Both options make it possible to help customers recover in a matter of minutes with just the push of a button.

You will still need to complete an appropriate restore, but spinning up VMs with LiveBoot or Cloud LiveBoot buys you time because your customer can still be up and running while you make the necessary fixes. According to a recent study by Everbridge, the average cost of IT downtime is $8,662 per minute, so limiting downtime with LiveBoot or Cloud LiveBoot also helps save the customer money.

What type of customers is it a good fit for?

Barracuda Backup – Intronis MSP Edition, LiveBoot, and Cloud LiveBoot are a good fit for customers running VMware vSphere or Microsoft Hyper-V. If you have customers running those hypervisors, this is the solution you want, especially if they have short Recovery Time Objectives (RTO). Spinning up virtual machines for rapid recovery helps you meet shorter RTOs, and there is less disruption to the customer.

When you're an MSP, LiveBoot and Cloud LiveBoot are a huge service to be able to offer customers because these options will give them peace of mind knowing that you can help them minimize downtime and get back up and running quickly if they do experience an outage.
