“For everything, there is a first time,” and Thursday, Sept. 8 marked the 50th anniversary of the first episode of the original Star Trek. How did you celebrate? Even though the original show was only on for three seasons, it was the first show to have an organized fandom, and since then millions of Trekkies have gotten hooked on the shows and movies. The most recent Star Trek movie hit the movie theaters in July and made $244.5 million, showing that Star Trek isn’t just a thing of the past.
One of the coolest things about the show has always been the awesome technology. (Beam me up, Scotty!) The two most common tools in Star Trek were the communicator and the ComBadge. The communicator debuted in 1964 in the episode titled “The Cage”, and this small handheld device allowed crew members to contact other ships in orbit without using satellites. The ComBadge easily allowed communication to any individual, ship, or ship’s computer by a simple touch to the badge.
Exciting news for Trekkies everywhere: If you want to own your own communicator you now can! This Bluetooth Communicator has authentic Star Trek sounds and lets you listen to your music or consult your crew. The communicator is on sale at Thinkgeek.com and is only $149. So when you contact Scotty he will clearly hear your “one to beam up.”
There’s a ComBadge available for Bluetooth as well! This one hasn't been released yet, but you can pre-order and receive it in early November. This is only $79.99 at Thinkgeek.com. When finish your call don’t forget to say “(name) out.”
Happy birthday, Star Trek, we can’t wait to see what the next 50 years will bring!
