3 reasons why native VM backup is better than image-based solutions

Posted by Matt Kowalski on Jan 23, 2014 11:27:00 AM

One of the great values that an MSP can provide to customers is a boost in efficiency, flexibility, and cost savings. There are a number of ways innovative MSPs continue to propose and implement IT solutions that save their clients money and their techs time and headaches, and none of these have been as impactful in recent years as server virtualization.

Unless you’ve just stepped out of Doc Brown’s time machine (warning: we still need roads here) there’s a good bet you’ve experienced some of the benefits virtualization has to offer. These include reduced hardware costs and maintenance, ease of provisioning and configuring new servers, speed of deployment, and flexibility to grow or change a client’s environment to meet their changing needs.

Sounds great, right? Then why would you implement a backup solution that doesn’t take full advantage of all that virtualization has to offer?

There are a ton of backup solutions out there – too many to count – and a bunch of them do a great job of backing up physical servers by taking full disk images. Since virtual machines are just software versions of these physical servers, it stands to reason that they can be backed up in the same way, right?

Posted by Smitty Kirsten on Nov 5, 2013 10:10:00 AM

By Smitty Kirsten, VP of UXD Design

The Intronis Fall Release ’13 is out this week, and we’re very excited to see the finished product finally released. In the new update, we made several design enhancements that will make it easier and more precise for MSPs to pick and choose the data they want to back up. These changes are part of what makes our Partner Portal the most functional, intuitive online backup management tool it can be.

If you want a complete look at all of the new updates in the Intronis Fall Release ’13, read my colleague Matt Kowalski’s General Overview blog post. And to get more details on our enhanced VMware backup support, check out John Farrell’s blog post from last week.

Image-Level vs. File-Level: What’s the Real Advantage?

Posted by Matt Kowalski on Jan 31, 2013 4:26:00 PM

By Matt Kowalski, Senior Product Manager

When our Fall Release ’12 hit the market last November, I don’t know who was more excited – us or our partners.  In particular, the new VMware integration is really changing the game by allowing our partners to easily and efficiently deliver both image- and file-level backup options to their customers.

In the past, delivering image-level backup meant some of our partners were cobbling together a secondary solution to run alongside Intronis. Needless to say, that didn’t sit well with us. Our mantra at Intronis is ease of use and full functionality. We wanted to extend our solution to include image-level backup, and we’ve done just that with the Fall Release.

We decided that with many partners already leveraging VMware, we’d start there. We worked diligently to align VMware image-level backup with the other options Intronis provides, enabling our partners to easily support virtualized environments. Now they take a snapshot of an entire server, or choose to protect individual elements of a customer environment with traditional file-level backup.

The advantage of pairing an image-level backup with a more granular file/folder backup is additional flexibility and agility for Intronis partners as they work to restore customer environments with as little disruption as possible. While most recovery needs are met by our original file-level approach, when a disaster wipes out a customer environment, image-level backup can save the day – and make our partners into heroes.

I could go on for weeks sharing the scenarios for two-pronged image- and file-level backup, but the best way to learn more about our Fall Release ’12 and the VMware integration is through the Intronis Resource Center, found in the Partner Portal.

There you will also find a Quick Start Guide for the new integration, as well as detailed video training around a variety of VMware and image-level backup topics. For those partners with more questions, don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and call your account manager – they are your best source for identifying what resources can help you with your individual needs.

And please, as you take advantage of this new integration, let us know how you like it by leaving your feedback in the comments field. Also, please share your backup and recovery success stories by submitting an entry to our Intronis Hero Award — each month one winner receives a $250 Amazon gift card!

Intronis In The News: Cloud Backup Doesn’t Need to be a Loss Leader

Posted by Naomi Price on Jan 28, 2013 3:28:00 PM

Don’t miss the chance to read the advice from our own channel chief, Neal Bradbury, as he chats with Business Solutions on the hot topic of turning backup into a profit center. "Cloud Backup Doesn’t Need To Be A Loss Leader," which appeared Jan. 16, featured Neal’s advice on selling cloud solutions – starting with backup – to a cloud-hungry SMB market, and then subsequently turning those sales into a rich recurring revenue driver in your business.

Neal’s tips included:

  • Bundle cloud backup with on-premise for two-prong, redundant protection for your customers
  • Remember to leverage virtualization to ease backup and disaster recovery, and don’t overlook those virtual machines in your customer backup plans, something made easier with the integration of VMware into Intronis
  • Be your customers’ virtual CIO, offering network assessments and guidance on best practices around backup and disaster recovery

Your Ideas Make Our Online Backup Better

Posted by Matt Kowalski on Mar 16, 2012 9:33:00 AM

If there is one thing I love about working in the IT channel, it’s working directly with our partners, whether it’s through email, beta tests, or at conferences and trade shows. What I’ve observed is that the IT channel is really a giant community, willing to share ideas and improve the community as a whole. And you guys really know your stuff; the amount of knowledge and insight that I’ve gained from the partner community has been fantastic.

A great example of this insight is the feedback we get on our online backup product in our feedback forum. One discussion in our feedback forum is the branding of the management portal. Through comments posted on this item, we’ve sparked a great discussion on the most important reasons to brand the management portal, as well as hashed out a few areas of the portal ripe for branding. This is fantastic for us as it provides us definitive points to cover when we add the functionality to brand the portal. We know exactly how to deliver the right value, and our partners get insight into our thought process and status.

When is Local Backup Better than Cloud Backup?

Posted by Intronis Staff on Feb 23, 2012 1:55:00 PM

Helping your clients determine whether their data needs to be kept in the cloud or locally can save both you and your clients’ time and money. Most often, a combination of local backup and online backup can work wonderfully for clients. The one thing you need to help you set a backup strategy is to define the difference between critical and non-critical data.

Here is a sample definition of each to get the conversation started:

Saving Manhours Per Gigabyte with Mailbox Level Backups

Posted by Intronis Staff on Nov 3, 2011 9:18:00 AM

Exchange Information Store backups with Intronis Cloud Backup + Recovery really are the best way to save your clients in the event of a disaster. You can pull down their entire Exchange database as of the last backup, and get them up and running quickly. There are some instances however, where restoring Exchange Information Store backups won’t provide you with the optimum number of manhours per gigabyte. Consider one of the following scenarios:

Scenario #1: Your client has lost his or her contacts folder in their mailbox and they need data recovery in a hurry to help finish a mass email.

From the time we enter kindergarten, we are inundated with lists. Wash your hands. Look both ways. Brush your teeth. Whistle while you work. (Okay, the last one is optional.)  There is a to-do list for almost everything…. even data protection.

The list below may not save lives, but it could save you a ton a grief. Nearly all backup and restore problems are preventable. A little up front effort can be the ounce of prevention that is worth a pound of cure.

1. Perform a Data Assessment
